There are endless WWII novels out there. What makes this book special is that it focuses on a 24 hour day.
All The Lights in Our Sky – named after the thousands of planes and bombs that lit up the sky that day – follows five different women in Europe and how they interacted and navigated through the events of D-Day.
All the Lights in the Heavens tell us of the fear, the terror, and the horror of the nameless day. It tells us how women of different ages, stations, loyalties and places manage the event. How can they have the courage to do what needs to be done.

Another important theme of this book is the role and expectations of women at that time. Each character has a male counterpart and a critical moment when they have to decide whether to stand up for themselves or ‘fall in line’.
The highlight is the gore. If this were a movie, it would definitely be rated R for violence and gore. It’s different when you read it than when you see it, but there are many descriptions of destruction, injury and death.

Because there are so many WWII books out there, it’s hard for me to share this on some of the books out there. The idea of focusing on different characters while looking at one day in history is interesting. But I think we don’t have enough time with all the characters.
One Year Praying Through The Bible For Your Kids
I think the author will weave all their stories in the end as we saw done in Cloud Cuckoo Land, but only Flora and Emilia wonder. I think it would make more sense for the large cast of characters if their stories were intertwined or fulfilled in the end.
Instead it felt a bit shallow. More time seems to be spent explaining the war/action/crime than anyone else’s story. I’m not sure I’d be better because there’s only so much ‘character development’ that can happen in one day and do more than return from the past and now this only adds to creating historical depth complexity and with the flow of the chapter.
I would say that if D-Day is special to you, or books with a lot of symbolism, or you just want to read all the WWII stuff out there, I think you’ll enjoy this book.
If you’re looking for a really good WWII novel, I’m not sure this is the one for you. It’s not a bad book and I didn’t hurt anyone by reading it – it has an impact – it just doesn’t feel like other WWII books I’ve read.

Often when we think of D-Day, we think of the stormy weather on the beach. But it was more than that. There is an American in Berlin who is now “Axis Sally” and is trying to pretend the treason trial won’t happen. In the coastal cities of France, there is great destruction and violence.
