Former US Senator Barbara Boxer was assaulted and her moveable phone stolen on Monday in Auckland, according to a message posted on her Twitter account.
Boxer, 80, a California Democrat in the US Senate from 1993 to 2017, was robbed in Oakland’s Jack London Square neighborhood, according to Twitter. The post said an attacker pushed her in the back, stole her moveable phone and fled in a waiting car.
The previous senator was not seriously injured.
In response to questions about Boxer’s tweet, Oakland Police Department spokeswoman Johnna Watson said someone was robbed at 1:15 p.m. in the 300th off Third Street. Watson said in an email that the department will not identify the theft victim.
Watson said the Oakland Police Department is offering a reward of up to $2,000 for information leading to an arrest.
This is an evolving story and will be updated.
