Please note: If you have already made a reservation, please make sure you have the rental ID number (found in the confirmation email) or the email address you used when booking so that we can process your can find data quickly. The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, at 420 S. Tryon Street, is a 36,500-square-foot museum focusing on mid-20th century modern art. The museum is part of Uptown Charlotte’s Levine Center for the Arts, which also includes the Mint Museum Uptown, the Gantt Center for African American Arts and Culture and the Knight Theater.
The fourth floor gallery is closed for the installation of the upcoming exhibition. During the gallery closure, from August 1 to September 9, 2022, the rest of the museum will be open, with FREE admission.

Located in Bechtler, right in the footprint of the Charlotte Pride Festival, the museum is open for free from noon to 5 p.m. Come enjoy cool air conditioning and some even cooler art shows!
In addition to the Mint Museum Uptown and the Gantt Center, The Bechtler is free to visit on Wednesday evenings from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Wednesday Night Live runs until the end of August. Read more about Wednesday Night Live here.

Bechtler Museum Free Through September 9
Local choreographer, dancer and community organizer AJ Glasco will curate a preview of dancers for the upcoming We Are Hip Hop Weekend, taking place on Saturday, September 17 in conjunction with the Charlotte International Arts Festival. This preview of Wednesday Night Live features dance artists Jason Dawkins, Jerry Dean and Michael Graham.
The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art is the only museum in the southern United States dedicated to European and American contemporary art and its heritage. A remarkable era of art history from the collection of the Bechtler family in Zurich includes works by the most important and influential figures of modernism in the collection of the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art. This intimate exhibition features 28 major works of art from the Bechtler collection, including works by Alexander Calder, Le Corbusier, Edgar Degas, Max Ernst, Alberto Giacometti, Hans Hartung, Barbara Hepworth, Jasper Johns, Paul Klee, Fernand Legér, Alfred Mannessier. Joan Miró, Kenneth Noland, Pablo Picasso, Bridget Riley, Niki de Saint Phalle, Gustave Singier, Nicolas de Staël and Andy Warhol.
Jean Tinguely (1925–1991) was a Swiss sculptor best known for his mechanical sculptures, formally known as “metamathematica”, which extended the Dada tradition into the latter part of the 20th century. Born in Fribourg, Switzerland and raised in Basel, Tinguely studied art at the Allgemeine Gewerbeschule (general trade school) before moving to Paris in 1952. There he lived and worked among a vibrant community of European artists who came together in search of radical directions. alternatives to the dominant aesthetics of their time, especially lyrical abstract painting. Using collage and assemblage techniques, this new generation of artists attempted to dissolve the traditional boundaries between art and life. For Tinguely, this meant the development of kinetically motorized sculptures and related works, constructed from scraps and remnants of urban life that barely hold together in motion.
In addition to being one of the most important and progressive European artists to emerge in the second half of the 20th century, Jean Tinguely was also the partner of Niki de Saint Phalle, a close friend of the Bechtler family and creator. the iconic Le Grand Oiseau de Feu sur l’Arche at the entrance to the Bechtler Museum. On display are three large sculptures and a selection of painted and collage-illustrated letters sent to various members of the Bechtler family.

American artist Sol LeWitt (1908-2007) is considered one of the founders of both minimalism and conceptual art and created almost 1,350 murals between 1969 and his death in 2007. LeWitt is known for his suggestion that the artist only has to offer. an idea or set of instructions for a work of art, leaving the actual production of the work to someone else. LeWitt was supported by the Bechtler family, who purchased the artist’s early sculpture in 1969 and brought two notable wall drawings to the Carillon Building, Charlotte-Wall Drawing #683 and Wall Drawing #995, now installed in the building’s lobby . In the first major museum survey of LeWitt’s work in the Southern United States in nearly 50 years, Sol LeWitt: All Ideas Are Art, supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, offers residents of the South unprecedented access to works of art. by one of the most important artists of the 20th century. Presented in collaboration with the Sol LeWitt Estate, the exhibition, featuring ten large-scale wall drawings by LeWitt and a selection of sculptures spanning four decades of his career, is installed in dialogue with the museum’s signature Mario Botta-designed architecture, offering visitors the experience of interacting with an intimate and site-specific installation.
