Rick McAlexander, CEO of The House Plan Company, a leading Oregon-based home plan sales company, offers four important pieces of advice when choosing the right floor plan for new home construction.

The first step in choosing the right home design, even before buying a home, is to determine your goals for your new home and create a “wish list” of needed spaces, features, and amenities based on your life. McAlexander said this goal-setting process sets the stage for other decisions that follow, such as deciding on the size and style of the home, the floor plan and budget.

“My biggest advice to clients is to pay close attention to their goals for building a new home before they start thinking about design options,” says McAlexander. “When I meet a new client, I start by asking some very basic questions, such as ‘What are your plans for the house? Do you want to live here for the next 15 to 25 years, or do you want to sell it in a few years?’

There are many factors to consider when designing a living space, such as how to configure the space for integration or privacy and how to accommodate the family’s changing needs over time. McAlexander noted that clients with children often want the home’s private spaces, such as bedrooms and bathrooms, to be more closely grouped together. In contrast, you’ll see families with young adults requesting more independent space in two-story apartment designs.

“Typically, the number of floors is determined by factors such as multiple constraints and privacy needs.
