US law enforcement said August 6 that a woman who says New York Governor Andrew Cuomo touched her chest has filed a criminal complaint against the politician, raising the possibility of charges being brought against him.

The woman, who has not been named but works as Cuomo’s aide, says the three-term governor assaulted her at his executive palace final year.

Her claim formed part of an explosive report this week that said Cuomo sexually harassed 11 current and previous government employees.

The veteran Democrat, 63, has repeatedly denied touching a woman inappropriately.

“A criminal case was filed yesterday,” an Albany County Sheriff’s Office official told AFP.

US media said the complaint was submitted by a woman referred to as “Executive Assistant No. 1” in the report published by New York State Attorney General Letitia James on August 3.

The self-reliant investigation, which was civilian in nature, said Cuomo sexually assaulted 11 current and previous government employees.

“Executive Assistant No. 1” told the investigation that Cuomo had raised his hand on her blouse in his office in November 2020.

Cuomo’s lawyers responded to James’ investigation at an August 6 news conference.

They complained that they had not received advance notice that the report was about to be released, and said investigators had not shared testimonial transcripts with them.

“This was one-sided and ambushed,” Cuomo’s attorney, Rita Glavin, said.

The attorney also showed reporters transcripts of emails allegedly sent by Executive Assistant 1 that Glavin said cast doubt on her testimony.

James’ press secretary, Fabian Levy, responded to the “attack” on the “independence and credibility” of the investigation in a statement issued on August 6, saying, “Any suggestion that attempts to undermine the credibility of these women or this investigation are regrettable.”

Levy confirmed that Cuomo himself asked James to oversee an self-reliant investigation in light of the accusations, adding that revised interview transcripts would be made available to the state assembly.

He said, “There are 11 women whose accounts have been confirmed by a mountain of evidence.”

Rejected calls to resign

At fewest five county attorneys have since opened investigations into Cuomo’s behavior.

Legal experts have suggested Cuomo could confront forced misdemeanor charges.

James’ report also accused him of heading a destitute workplace for women and of taking retaliatory action against at fewest one of his accusers.

Cuomo has rejected calls from President Joe Biden and other eminent Democrats to resign and state lawmakers are moving to impeach him.

He was given an August 13 deadline to present his defense evidence in the impeachment inquiry.

Cuomo was initially praised for his handling of the coronavirus crisis prior being drowned out by accusations that he was hiding the scale of deaths in nursing homes.

He is believed to have lengthy aspired to triumph a fourth term as governor in elections scheduled for November next year, but a poll released on August 6 suggests he may have trouble winning.

The Quinnipiac University poll found that 70% of New York voters questioned believed he should resign, while 55% believed he should be charged with a crime.
