There are two versions of Sketchup. One is Sketchup Rii which is free and the other is Sketchup Pro. This article is about free blueprint software, so we’ll take a look at Sketchup. I know though that Sketchup Pro is used by many professional architects.

I think we all first heard of Sketchup when it was part of Google’s free software. Now Sketchup is produced and developed by Trimble.

Due to the complexity of the software, it cannot be used online. Instead, you have to download it to use it.
There is a tablet version of this software called Sketchup Mobile Viewer that allows you to view and explore sketch models on your phone.
To get started, the first thing to do is go to the website and download Sketchup.
Unlike all the other landscape software reviews I’ve done, this Sketchup review is going to be different. This is because all other floor plan applications have walls, windows, doors, etc. customizations already made in the software. Where, like in Sketchup, everything and anything can be made from scratch.

In Sketchup there are different tools that are used to create things. The most common tool would be the pen tool, followed by the push and pull tool.
Building a building plan can be done in a 3D view or a 2D view. For the 2D view I simply click on “Top View” and compare the projection.
While I have to admit it was frustrating at first to make walls from scratch, once I got used to making squares and pushing and pulling points at a certain height, it wasn’t that hard. It also allows us to make custom walls of different thicknesses.

Then use the push tool to give a rectangular 3D shape with height so that we have a wall.
There are also three axes in the software. The x-axis is in red, the y-axis is in blue, and the z-axis is in red. Knowing what your “top” would be, I went with blue (y). These axes are very useful when drawing shapes.

I made this fluid line using a spring tool with different diameters. Then I simply pull the line out with a push and pull rod to form a fluid wall.
As I mentioned before, in order to add doors and windows I had to leave blank spaces in the wall. Think of yourself as having built the house. During construction, gaps are left in the wall so that doors and windows can be added later.
This is where it gets very technical. You need to know the height of the doors and the height of the window lintels and make the gaps exactly where you want the windows to go.
To create gaps in the wall, push and pull our tool again. First we draw the line of the window on the wall using a pencil or a square tool, then we use a push rod to push this plane into the wall to the same thickness as the wall. So it makes a perfect gap in the wall.

This is the most exciting part of creating a floor plan. There are a lot of gems available in the 3D store. When you find the right piece of furniture you’re looking for, use the move tool to move it wherever you want. Even better is that you can edit and change the ornament to your heart’s content. Don’t like the color? You can always use tools to change color or texture. You can even delete some parts of the furniture, change its size, rotate it, decompose it into smaller parts and so on.
I also added a second floor view. The more ornaments you add, the heavier the Sketchup file is. So make sure you download the light files from the 3D store because Sketchup can have a bit of trouble and slow down if the file is heavy.

In another review of floor plan software, trends start as a plan, then there may be options to view in 3D. In Sketchup, you work in 3D as the design is built.
You can use the same option to view 2D elevations. Sketchup’s part plane tool can be used to cut parts from anywhere. Both the section plane and the parallel projection can be used to produce plot and section diagrams.
Sketchup has different viewing angles and the main view where we produce our 3D models. We can move around the model and zoom in and out easily using the mouse.
The visual concept space in Sketchup is fun. Using Sketchup, I noticed that the angle I can see my model is 30 degrees, but the human eye will have a different field of view. The meaning of the visual aspect will be different.
