The House of the Dead: Remake is a rail shooter in which up to two players shoot creatures, rescue explorers, collect bonus items, and fight bosses. The game retains the multiple endings and branching paths of the original House of the Dead

As in the original version, the player loses a life due to enemy attacks and accidentally shooting explorers. More lives and point bonuses are awarded by shooting objects in the background and rescuing explorers.

The Nintendo Switch version features analog controls, gyroscopic targeting, and combo controls. The gyro works with either a single Joy-Con or dual controllers, with sensitivity and aim assist options available.

There are “classic” and “modern” versions of the scoring system. The player can choose between easy, normal, hard, and lane difficulties that give the player more or less lives. The higher the difficulty selected, the more points the player can earn.

The new version includes a new game mode, Horde Mode, which features up to 15 times more enemies on screen.

Other features include leaderboards, achievements, cheat codes, photo mode, and a gallery displaying object names, 3D models, descriptions, and weaknesses.

The ‘Stabilized’ and ‘Manual’ switching modes feature frame rates of 60 and 30 respectively. Both modes have a resolution of 720p.

Despite its success in arcades, Sega’s 1996 lightsaber game The House of the Dead was not ported to the Sega Saturn and Microsoft Windows until 1998. This port underwent a major graphical overhaul.

Forever Entertainment acquired the license for the first two House of the Dead games on September 25, 2019.
