How To Build A Wooden Bed Frame
How To Build A Wooden Bed Frame – Yesterday I shared the second part of our small bedroom. You can check here. If you missed the first post about our hardwood sanding, you can view that post here. Scott and I have been thinking about what type of bed we want to buy for our youngest son. Before starting this room, we sold all its items on the Facebook market. She has an old bed and she loves it so she just wants something that will grow with her. Today we’re going to show you how to easily build a solid wood bed frame from Home Depot.
This tutorial is for a full size bed frame. Every car is different, so adjust the cuts for your specific size.
How To Build A Wooden Bed Frame
Make the first four cuts in the 2×4 and place them in a rectangle like the picture above. You will notice that the top and bottom 2×4 boards are inside the outside 2×4 boards.

Next, you cut three 2x4s and place them in the center of the square, spaced evenly, as shown above.
Next, you take your 2×6 boards for the floor and go under what you just built. Place the 2×6 boards under the top deck to mark where your installation will be. You don’t want to see your basement from the side of the bed.
You will place your 2×6 back support in the center of the sub-floor. This is your 58 inch cut.
Before placing the board on top of the floor, we attached the two boards to the boards in the wall to prevent the bed from moving. You can sit on the edge of the bed and not move. Safety first.

Finally, we measured and cut a piece of floorboard from Home Depot. We attached the board with a finishing nail gun. This is what makes the bed rest.
The base wasn’t wide enough for the bed frame, so we used the extra and cut two small pieces right to the wall.
We are very impressed with how the DIY floating bed frame looks. It was not recorded when we installed the 1×6 oak panels on the 2×4 sides. If you decide to do the same, we will attach it to our nail gun. Be sure to protect the oak floors with polymer before moving the bed back. I applied two monochromatic layers, with a little cream in between.
In the end, we finished the repair of the windows, and now we have blown up the spaces with this wonderful product. So we started the secret project we did for our son!

This article will teach you how to make a bed frame for a fraction of what you would pay at the hardware store. This bed frame is made from everyday engineered wood available at Home Depot or your local lumber yard. The natural color of the cedar is really washed out with the Minwax clear semi-gloss polyurethane that I used to protect the wood and give it a beautiful finish. The plans are for a double bed, but you can change the width to fit a variety of different styles.
This project is sponsored by Minwax and I was paid to create this project. I only read products that I truly believe in and recommend to my friends and family. Minwax is one such product. I have been using their dirt and sealants for years. They have a variety of stains and seals.

Please note: These are the dimensions of the wood and the markings of the boards at your local wood yard. The plans have changed and the measurements can be taken. For example (a 2×4 board is 1 1/2 inches thick and 3 1/2 inches wide). *Please note that some of the links in this post are affiliate links. *Make sure the wood is dry before building. Cedar wood has a high moisture content, so allow it to dry for a week or more before building the flooring to prevent it from shrinking.
Prices vary depending on where you live and where the wood is sold. Here’s a look at the approximate price.
Total cost of wood (pine) – $98 | Total project cost using pine or fir: $144
Use a miter saw to cut the 4×4 legs to the desired size. Next, cut the 2×4 boards and brackets to the same length for the head and tail. You can find the dimensions in the DIY Pete Bed Frame plans, which you can download in PDF format.

Use an orbital sander with 120 grit sandpaper. Smooth the surfaces and go around the edges to clean up the rough edges. If you’re using cedar, you’ll need to spend some time sanding it, as the finish will be rough from the mill. The surfaces should be sanded to a smooth but still textured surface.
Use the pocket hole tool to create pocket holes in the 2×4 boards. Short boards require 2 pockets on each end. The three long boards require 2 pockets at each end. If you need help figuring out Kreg Jig settings, check out my friend Ty’s free resource with the Kreg Jig Settings Calculator here.
Perimeter panels should have pocket holes on either side. Just put the board in the template like I did in the photo below. When finished, match the pocket holes and arrow points.
Use 2 1/2-inch self-tapping screws to attach the brackets. Remember to use wood glue on the ends of each short board.

Attach the legs to the 2×4 frame using a 2 1/2-inch dowel and wood glue. I used 1 inch thick boards as spacers to support the 2×4 from the table. This way the frame sits in the center of the 4×4 legs. Watch my video tutorial for more information.
Glue and nail the supports in place. I used 1 1/4 inch size 16 nails. Use 2 nails in each area. I used 4 blocks. If it doesn’t fit perfectly, you can cut it to width with a table saw.
The head is made using the same techniques we used for the footboard. Punch holes for the pockets and join them to form the frame.
Support the frame with 1-inch boards (spacers) so that the frame is 4×4.

In addition to attaching the top 2×4 board from the bottom with 2 1/2-inch pocket screws, I added two 3-inch pieces of wood from each end to go in 2×4 and 4x. 4. If you want, you can fill the holes with wood putty to hide them.
Attach the cedar fences. I used all 5 brackets and ripped the 6th bracket to 2 inches wider on my table saw to fit.
Cut the 2×8 boards to the length indicated on the plans. Cut the 2×2 board to the same length.
Connect the 2×2 to the 2×8 using 2 1/2 inch long wood screws and wood glue. A 2×2 board holds the box spring in place.
The Project Lady
Now it’s time to choose the solution for your project. I chose Minwax Clear Semi-Gloss Polyurethane for the DIY bed frame. This is an oil based oil that brings out the colors of the wood. The knots darken and the wood has a warm glow. For those who prefer a surface finish, I highly recommend Minwax Water Based Polyurethane. I used Minwax Water Based Polyurethane in my recent DIY barndoor project. Apply sealant with a quality brush. Wear a respirator or make sure you are in a well ventilated area when applying the glue.
This product is very easy to use. Brush back and forth so as not to make it too dark. If there are a few drops here and there, wash them off.
Allow sufficient time for the sealer to dry. Drying time depends on temperature and humidity. After about 12 hours I was able to do light sanding with 600-800 grit sandpaper. Light sand makes it smooth
