Nowadays, it is becoming more difficult for entrepreneurs to engage in retail arbitrage as they promote their products on e-commerce sites like Amazon and eBay. It’s time to start thinking about options that will help you transfer full control of your business brand from the e-commerce marketplace to your hands.

You have to remember that starting your own coffee brand is not a get-rich-quick thing; It requires careful research, planning and strong business sense. You must be alert, patient and totally focused on details.

Private label products have grown rapidly in recent years as more companies and distributors realize the potential success and rewards it brings. A brand is what differentiates you in the market, it is not a symbol or an advertisement. In this tutorial, I’ll walk you through the process of creating a custom logo for a fictional coffee shop that will be applied to a simulated strong brand. Using a combination of Photoshop and Illustrator techniques, we’ll first go through the process of building our logo and setting up several different versions to use. Once we’ve identified our logo options, we’ll begin applying them to a custom branded mockup to help tie it together to express the overall feel of our business. Let’s start by opening Illustrator and creating a new document. For Name, enter “roast-house-logo”, then set “Height” and “Width” to “4”, using inches as increments. We’ll also want to enter the number “2” for “Artboards” so we can start with two of them. Once you’ve set up your new document, go ahead and hit “Back” on your keyboard or click “Create” in the lower right corner.

Go to the File menu and select Open before navigating to the freebies folder for this tutorial. Then go to the “7th Avenue Designs” folder and find the “Frame_xx.eps” file. You’ll find a number of different EPS files here, and you’ll want to choose the version that’s compatible with the version of Illustrator you’re using. Once you have selected the desired EPS file, select “Open” to display it.

Once you have your file open, press Command/Ctrl+A on your keyboard to “Select All” and then press Command/Ctrl+C to copy it. Once done, you can press Command/Ctrl+W to close the tab.

Go to your first artboard and press Command/Ctrl+F to “Place in Front”, this will place the frame in the center of your artboard. Before we continue, we want to check that Smart Guides are enabled to help us align our elements. To do this, simply go to the View menu and make sure you select Smart Guides. Instead, you will see the Command/Ctrl+U key combination displayed on the keyboard.

After opening the character sheet, press ‘T’ on your keyboard and then click on your first drawing to capitalize the word ‘ROAST HOUSE’. For the typography we’ll be using ‘Instaquote Sticks and Stones’, one of the lovely fonts from Set Sail Studios available in the full pack. For the point size here, choose a size of about “46.78 pt” or you can just round it up to “47 pt” as long as it’s roughly the same size as the image shown here:

Now press Command/Ctrl+Shift+A to “Deselect All” and then click below the first line of text to create a new line. Then type the word “COFFEE” in the same font, but this time we will make the font size “21.46 pt” or “21.5 pt”.

After typing the text “CAFE CAFE” we can use the same keyboard shortcut as before to deselect everything – Command/Ctrl+Shift+A or you can go to the “Select” menu and select “Deselect” from the drop down list. Now let’s click on the text “BAKED HOUSE” with the Type Tool (T) still active and this time type the word “BROOKLYN” in capital letters. Go back to the characters panel and change the font to our second font from Set Sail Studios called “Instaquote Hummingbird” with a size of about “24.21 pt” as shown below:

In the Warp Options dialog that appears, make sure you select Arc in the Style menu and then Horizontal before entering the value 35%. If you check the Preview box at the bottom, you can also move the slider to see what this effect looks like with different settings applied. After entering the settings, go ahead and click “OK” or just press “Return” on your keyboard to apply the warp effect to your text.

Return to the File menu and select Open again. Now we want to select the “Leaves_xx.eps” file from the freebies folder to open it in Illustrator.

After opening the file, press Command/Ctrl+A to select it and then Command/Ctrl+C to copy it. Once you’ve done that, press Command/Ctrl+W to close the tab and return to your main document.

When you’re back in your working document, press Command/Ctrl+V to place the leaf vector, then hold Shift and drag in from any of the four corners of the bounding box to shrink it and place it exactly above the “BROOKLYN” curve as shown here:

Return to the File menu and select Open again. Now we want to select the “Arrow_xx.eps” file from the freebies folder to open it in Illustrator.

When you’re back in your working document, press Command/Ctrl+V to insert the arrow vector, then hold Shift and drag in from any of the four corners of the bounding box to collapse it and place it below the text “CAFE CAFE” . We’re also going to want to rotate the arrow about 45 degrees, so to do that we just hold down the Shift key again and move the cursor over any of the four corners of the bounding box until it becomes a curved, double-sided arrow. From here you can move your mouse to the left to rotate the arrow in 45° increments until it looks like the arrow shown here:

When the dialog box appears, we want to make sure we set the Axis to Vertical and check the Preview box to make sure you see a mirror image of your first arrow. If everything looks good, go ahead and press “Back” on your keyboard to apply the changes.

Press Command/Ctrl+Shift+A to deselect everything and then press ‘V’ to return to your main selection tool, the black arrow in the toolbar. From here, click and drag around both arrows to select them at the same time, then press Command/Ctrl+G to group them into one.

Now that we’ve grouped the arrows together, we want to make sure everything is nice and centered. First, let’s make sure everything is de-selected using the Command/Ctrl+Shift+A keyboard shortcut and then we’ll press ‘V’ to go back to our selection tool. Click and drag around the entire logo to select all, or use the Command/Ctrl+A keyboard shortcut to select all. From here, go to the “Window” menu and select “Align” from the drop-down menu.
