Light And Airy Film Presets – Photographers and clients often tell me how much they love the look of my photos because they are so light, bright and have a “light, airy” look. I gravitate towards natural and clean images and consider this style to be of the utmost importance. Finding your own style in photography can be difficult, but here are some tips to help you on your way.
First of all, what do I mean by “light and airy”? This is a style of photography that usually means images with lower contrast and softer colors.
Light And Airy Film Presets
You can get this look no matter what camera you have, but using a prime (prime lens) helps you create sharper images at smaller apertures. You want to shoot at the widest possible aperture, usually between 1.8-2.5, to get a blurred background. A good prime lens doesn’t have to cost a lot, if you have a Canon camera you can start with a 50 1.8. This is a great entry level lens to add to your kit. I am a Sony photographer and use the 55 1.8 lens 95% of the time on my wedding day.

Not all light is the same, and how you see it can help determine what type of photographer you are. You may have heard of the “golden hour”, the hour before sunset. This is when the light is the softest, helping to create a beautiful glow around your couple. This is the best time to shoot, but during a wedding, you don’t have the option to shoot everything at this time. Even in the middle of the day, when the light is strongest, you can achieve a consistent look throughout the day. I tend to always bring my clients back to what is known as “backlighting”. Then I exposed their skin tones, which gave me a light feel.
In the photo below, it was midday and we had no shade, so I positioned the group with their backs to the sun, creating a nice image of them.
Some people think that overexposing their digital images will help them get the look they want when you really want to shoot as perfectly exposed or slightly underexposed as possible. This will help preserve the shadows and highlights and make your editing process go more smoothly. In the image below you will see my original image and my edited image on the right.
At the beginning of your photography journey, you may have thought there was a magic preset that would make your images look exactly like your favorite photographer’s. Unfortunately, there is no one-click solution, but it helps get you where you want to go. Find a preset that has the basis of what you’re looking for and adjust from there. I’ve been through many presets on my journey, but my favorite is the Prototype Flow preset. These presets helped me achieve the look I wanted with minimal adjustments.

While there are no “rules” to follow when creating light and airy images, here are some commonalities and general guidelines:
Light & Airy Color Grading Lightroom Presets + Luts
Simplicity is the key to achieving a light and airy look. The mentality of looking for shots, reflexes, movement, etc. it’s not that important. Instead, create simple, clean beauty by focusing on expression and light in the scene.
Light and airy photos usually work best with images that have a muted color palette. Wardrobe styles and backgrounds often include natural browns, subtle greens and pinks, baby blues and other “soft” colors. Of course, this isn’t always the case, but again, these are just general guidelines for achieving the light and airy look and feel you want.
Light and airy photos usually work better in portrait/portrait orientation. While most photographers working in this style shoot both portrait and landscape, the proportions of a set of images are often more important on the vertical side.
The main reason for this is to focus on clean and simple beauty, with the subject taking up most of the frame in many photos. Again, there are exceptions and these are general rules, but you’ll see less and less “epic wide shots” and “environmental portraits” and more medium crops that focus on the subject’s expressions and details.

In light and air photography, you will also notice a greater use of natural light compared to other styles of photography. This is in line with the concept of clean, simple and natural beauty.
Light and lighting photography often relies on finding the right scene and shooting it at the right time of day and weather, rather than heavily altering the light. Note that in many light and airy situations photographers will use flash, and many advanced photographers use it skillfully while maintaining the appearance of natural light.
