You can pour patio concrete around the structural posts of your deck without too much difficulty or the need to modify anything. But I want to stress that if you are using concrete for your patio, you will definitely want to build your deck first. If you don’t, you’ll have to cut concrete to install your deck’s structural posts after the fact, and it’s not as easy or fun as it sounds.
If possible, ask your patio concrete pour contractor to avoid structural posts for your deck. The concrete acts like a sponge filled with water, which the wood will easily absorb. Therefore, any poured concrete that comes into contact with your wooden posts can cause them to prematurely rot and need to be replaced. If unavoidable, you can also protect it by using an environmentally friendly preservative on the bottom of the pole, such as copper naphthenate, copper pole sleeve, or separate the poured concrete from the platform pole using foam.
What if you build a patio with pavers? It’s just as easy and doesn’t require you to modify anything on your platform either. You may have to cut some pavers to create a good fit, but other than that, all you have to do is place them around the posts.

While we recommend building your deck before your patio, we understand that it doesn’t always work that way. But don’t worry, you can build your deck later. It’s just a little tricky and parts of the patio may need to be altered or repaired after it’s built.
If you’ve decided to build a second level deck, how you approach it depends on whether you used concrete or pavers for your patio.
We briefly touched on this earlier. But unfortunately, your contractor will have to cut through the concrete to dig holes for your deck’s structural posts. They must meet local building code requirements. So, typically, the hole should be dug about 16″ x 16″ square, and the posts should be at least as deep as the local frost line (in Michigan, that’s 42 inches).
Once your deck is built, your existing poured concrete patio may need landscaping to cover the cut holes. But there are several ways to deal with this:

If you used pavers for your existing patio, building your deck afterward is much more manageable and leaves little to no damage. Your contractor can simply pull the pavers, install the structural deck posts, build the deck, and then replace the pavers. If you haven’t started your deck and patio combo yet, but decide to build the patio first, you can have your contractor install the deck at the same time you build your patio. That way, when you go to build your deck, you won’t have to tear up your patio.
