Ranch Style Exterior Paint Colors
Benjamin Moore is one of our favorite sources for exterior paint colors. Among our favorite colors from their 2023 collection, we’ve narrowed down the top picks below.
Exterior Paint Color Palette For Ranch House Paint Colors For Exterior
Dark and moody exterior paint colors aren’t going anywhere, and Nightfall by Benjamin Moore is a great choice. This dark gray with subtle blue undertones brings to mind the north (hence the name). With an LRV of 6.36 it’s definitely dark. (Learn more about LRVs and why it’s so important when painting exterior surfaces here.)
We love combining Nightfall with natural building materials: wood, brick and stone. Its depth highlights the layers of contemporary homes like the one above. On the other hand, this tone can outshine facades with a lot of mixed materials, like the one below.
Walking a few steps darker, we come to Regent Green. With an LRV of 4.19, Regent Green can appear almost black in some lights. However, Benjamin Moore describes it as a deep, muted pine green. You’ll notice its jewel-like blue hue in the render above. This home is one of our team members’ favorites because of the way Regent Green brings out the naturally occurring blues and greens in the stone in the front. The back of the house is more modern, with gray on the upper level and almost black on the lower level. Regent Green brings it all together.
Bear Creek is one of our favorite earthy, neutral home exterior colors for 2023. It is deep, rich and wild, with a distinct smoky brown color. Upstairs, Bear Creek brings warmth to a contemporary facade with plenty of industrial accents.
Trending Exterior House Colors For 2023
The next most popular home exterior color in 2023 is pretty chameleon. In some operations, such as the one above, November rain may appear off-white. However, it is actually a light gray color with subtle green tones. Notice how the reds and purples in the stone of the house in this design soften the green and make the November rain completely neutral.
We’ve been saying it for years – beige is back. This is an excellent choice for homeowners looking for a neutral mid-range sound with depth and warmth. Grant Beige is a particular favorite among our experienced designers due to its versatility. It has an even mix of gray and beige shades with light green undertones. For the contemporary house above, the designer suggested Grant Beige as the field color because it provides warmth and softness as a balance to all the square edges.
There’s no doubt that neutral colors will always have their place in exterior design, but we love how green is taking over right now. And Mohgan Rishi is stunning. As effective in modern cabins as it is in Craftsman-style and even Victorian-style homes, Benjamin Moore called this shade “Normal” for a reason.
Fieldstone is a fairly organic neutral color with an LRV of 42.18, which puts it in the mid-range. It has considerable depth and a strong earthy green color. One of the most versatile of our best home exterior colors for 2023. There’s almost nothing fieldstone can’t do. We love it as a field color, but it can also look great on brick, like the transitional house above. Below, it provides cozy warmth above the shutters of a traditional house, with cloud cover above the brick and siding.
My 6 Favorite Exterior House Paint Colors
One of our favorite blue exterior home colors, Westcoat Navy is a classic shade that is a great choice for updated traditional exterior colors. When paired with light and/or bright design elements such as the off-white and natural red brick above, the deep blue of Westcoat Navy will stand out. However, Westcoat Navy can read a darker gray paired with even darker colors.
Sherwin Williams is another paint retailer we regularly recommend to homeowners looking for trendy exterior color palettes. Of our 16 Sherwin Williams favorites this year, we’ve narrowed it down to the top 7 candidates below.
Sherwin Williams’ Andiron is currently not visible, but we think that will change in 2023. This dark complex neutral has an LRV of 5. We think it’s a deep olive green with a strong dose of brown and all the warmth. In its name – a roaring and magnificent fire. Andiron looks beautiful in both traditional and contemporary homes. It is surprisingly versatile, pairing well with extremely difficult red brick (see above), black or white finishes, and popular wood and stone cladding options.
Inkwell has an LRV of 4, so it’s incredibly dark. However, its strong blue tint makes this shade look more like a deep charcoal than black. It’s moody and dramatic, and we love it in all sorts of uses. Above, our designers paired the inkwell with the front entry siding accents with a Sherwin Williams porpoise on top and chaparral on the trim to create a beautiful effect.

Pleasant Gray has an appropriate name. This warm gray is just that: pleasant. It has an LRV of 60, making it a mid-range light color and works with any texture and light and dark accents. Use it as a field color or as an accent and it will add a warm and inviting touch to your charm.
The next exterior home color trend in 2023 is Mountain Road. It’s a beautiful, earthy neutral with an LRV of 23, which means it has depth. Like the house above, Mountain Road appears bright and open combined with visible white elements. It can appear warmer and richer with shades of black, dark wood and copper within a darker color palette.
Universal Khaki by Sherwin Williams is warm and rich. It goes well with other warm design elements, such as walnut-stained wood elements and off-white finishes. We love how it looks in the monochromatic design above.
Exterior House Painting Tips From The Pros
The software comes in a warm blue-gray color that adds a fresh, coastal charm to any home. We love pairing the software with wood and brass accents to bring out its warmth.
Dover White by Sherwin Williams made our list of the best warm white paint colors of 2021 and now that we’ve been using it for two years, we rate it as one of the best colors for outdoor exterior use. 2023 Dover White is light and creamy, calming and relaxing, and always exudes a relaxing atmosphere. It was the perfect choice for cladding on the cottage style house above.
