The great thing about a rustic space is that it doesn’t have to feel too tacky: the more reclaimed wood and patina, the better. However, for those unfamiliar with the style, it can seem like a daunting task, one that can easily veer into lumberjack territory. Here we’ve rounded up a few of our favorite rustic living rooms for some seriously chic winter inspiration to get you started.
Materials matter, and the more attention you can pay to the details of your wood grain, stone and metals, the better. This living room from Purple Cherry Architects lets these elements shine, with an exposed wood ceiling and a towering stone fireplace.

Rustic living rooms can often feel very dark and moody, so we recommend combining that with lighter elements. Of course, the best way to bring that sensitivity is to have enough windows to let in the sun. Interior designer Anne Hepfer added this look to her cottage in Ontario, Canada: “I loved the look of a modern, Belgian-inspired vibe with black windows, bright white oak floors and a neutral color palette,” she says. and clean, so as not to distract from the natural beauty outside.”
Beautiful Living Room Ideas For A Timeless Look
Just because you want to get cozy doesn’t mean you have to rely on taxidermy and rough-hewn surfaces. Take the example of designer Tobias Petri, who created this minimalist Alpine retreat for his family using materials found on site. “We used larch wood from the nearby mountains, concrete and the [found] stone. That’s it. Nothing else,” says Petri. “No fancy materials. No fancy tiles. Simple and local.”
Traditional rustic is often thought of as having lots of earth tones, so change up the formula a bit by adding bright red, green or yellow, like in this space from Hattie Sparks. “We chose a darker paint to surround the homeowners and provide contrast with the green exterior,” says Hattie Collins, the company’s owner. “And we keep the windows bright and open, so the room feels even more connected to nature.”
We love a rustic look that takes liberties with the genre’s traditional formula, like this space from interior designer Robin Gannon, which plays with color, pattern and greenery. “We accented the reclaimed beams with beautiful natural wall coverings, woven shades, reupholstered blue mohair Womb chairs, an antique rug – and of course the antler chandelier gives the space a modern, rustic touch,” she says.
Sometimes less really is more. Regan Baker Design gave this living room a sleek, bright, focused look, allowing the breathtaking views to take center stage. “We keep the color palette simple with earthy highlights so the eye doesn’t have to adjust,” she says. “And we bought a lounge and swivel armchair that could be directed either into the room or outward to enjoy the view.”

If you are lucky enough to live in a home with period details, your living room interior should frame and complement these old-world aspects rather than compete with them. “Through the whitewashed wooden slats you can see the beautiful stone fireplace and appreciate the original details, such as the hayloft and stable door of this carriage house,” says Liz Caan, who designed this rustic space.
One of the best ways to make a statement in a rustic living room is with a striking, sky-high ceiling made from reclaimed wood. We love this space from the Wiseman Group, which has an upstairs. “Just like in nature, in this mountain retreat, the wood starts low and reaches high to create a forest above,” says James Hunter, the company’s design director.
Rustic isn’t a one-look-fits-all sensibility, so there’s room for those with more traditional tastes to delve into the aesthetic as well. For example, this space from Chandos Interiors combines subdued blue tones with an all-white background for a lighter look. “The organic textures and repeated ceiling beams really make the transitional style work, giving it a bit of patina so the modern touches don’t feel too cold,” says founder Chandos Dodson Epley.
If you’re the type who spends a lot of time exploring nature, a rustic living room is a great space to bring some of that sensibility indoors. Take this space as an example, which GordonDunning designed for someone who enjoys fly fishing and hunting. “We wanted to create a space that felt rustic, but with a touch of sophistication,” say co-founders Cate Dunning and Lathem Gordon. “The house gives us the atmosphere of a royal castle, and that’s what it’s all about!”
Modern Rustic Decorating Ideas
Not all rustic living rooms have to be in a cabin in the woods or a man cave in the mountains. This special space from Noor Property Group is located on the water and therefore immediately evokes beach vibes. “My intention was to create an airy and minimal space that felt calm and clean,” says director Amalia Graziani. “I have emphasized natural materials and raw fabrics, but kept a limited palette so that the water view and surrounding nature remain central.”
Heritage or antique furniture that feels a little worn, or reclaimed materials such as recycled wood, will feel right at home in a rustic living room. “Look for things that reflect the colors and textures you find in your natural environment,” says Sean Anderson of this living space from his moody bungalow in Memphis. “Look for items with a patina, things that had a life before you found them.”
This space from Workshop APD masterfully balances an exposed wood ceiling with warm, beachy tones for the ultimate rustic California retreat. Perfect for a staycation, or for those who aren’t crazy about the tried and true antler chandelier.
In Wisconsin, interior designer Bruce Fox turned a Boy Scout camp into a multi-generational family. “The room is filled with many different furniture styles, from wicker to medieval, giving it a relaxed yet sophisticated feel, allowing our client to relax and live a ‘less complicated’ life while at camp,” he says.

As the winter months approach, you’ll want a cozy place to curl up, so creating a rustic living space that feels warm and inviting should be at the top of your mind. This particular space – a retreat in Tahoe, California, designed by Marea Clark Interiors – brings exactly that energy. “Our goal was to appeal to the mountain environment and use wood and other natural materials, but make it suitable for all seasons with a refined palette,” says Clark.
