Like something out of a fun co-op RPG shooter with Unreal Engine visuals based on a popular anime franchise. But it’s actually a representation of one of the most tedious burdens in modern video game history.

Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet makes such a promise at first glance. Developed by industry legends Dimps and published by Bandai Namco, it’s a loot shooter set in a fictional online video game. It has fast, easy combat. Fun random weapons to collect. Clever jokes about how video games work. And a huge world to explore with a hook.

It starts with a handy character customization tool that lets you create your own anime character. Unlike many other anime games, Fatal Bullet doesn’t content itself with repeating scenes you’ve already seen. At least initially.
You will have fun creating your avatar in the first few minutes. And you’ll be excited to go out into the world.

Sword Art Online: Integral Factor is a 3D anime-themed MMORPG developed and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. The mobile MMORPG is based on the popular manga and anime show Sword Art Online and is the second mobile MMORPG from Sword Art Online, the first being Sword Art Online: Memory Defrag. The game was first announced at the Tokyo Game Show in September 2017, followed by a brief closed beta test in October of that year. The game was first released in Japan on December 2, 2017, followed by an English version a few months later on March 28, 2018. Sword Art Online is one of the most notable and unique anime titles. The property, which centers around characters playing as avatars in a virtual reality MMO world, is definitely ripe for video game adaptations. The latest release, Sword Art Online: Alicization Lycoris, places players in the world of the beloved anime and allows them to play out the anime’s storyline, including some of its most iconic moments. I had a chance to try out Bandai-Namco’s new game for the PlayStation 4. Here are my thoughts.
In Sword Art Online: Alicization Lycoris, you play as the main character, Kirito, on a journey that closely follows that of the anime and manga. Fan favorites like Eugeo and Alice will join Kirito throughout the story. What immediately struck me about SAO: Alicization Lycoris was the visuals and art design. Cuts and cuts looked like sequences lifted straight from the series.

Even while playing it felt like you were playing an anime episode. The world of Alicization Lycoris is incredibly realistic, from the look of the characters, the animation style of their expressions, to the environments and combat. Fans of the series will love taking a walk down memory lane and reliving some of the series’ most notable moments with this JRPG.
Sword Art Online: Alicization Lycoris allows players to customize their in-game avatar with a pretty impressive array of options. This goes for some of the main JRPG elements at play in this title.
Sword Art Online: Alicization Lycoris very closely follows what players expect from a standard JRPG. There are a variety of weapons, armor, and items, all of which provide different combat boosts and effects. There is also a skill tree that allows players to better define what playstyle they want to use. It’s all fine, it doesn’t add anything special, but it doesn’t detract from the gaming experience either.
Battles in SAO: Alicization Lycoris take place in real time. During combat, you control one party member at a time, with the ability to switch between them. There is a mix of light and heavy attacks that players can use to deal some basic damage, as well as special abilities that can really pack a punch.
Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization Review
I really enjoyed the combat in SAO: Alicization Lycoris, even if I did experience frame rate drops when things got too chaotic for my PS4. While the combat is fairly traditional, it is very satisfying. The controller rumbles with every landed attack, the stat feedback and unique combat animations are satisfying. Add to that the fact that there are many different ways to fight thanks to the many weapons and special abilities the player can use. I enjoyed jumping between my party members and using their various skills to take down opponents.
The story and narrative pacing of Alicization Lycoris is bogged down by excessive dialogue and long story pacing, a problem that plagues so many JRPGs. After just a few hours of gameplay, players will gain access to Alicization Lycoris’ online multiplayer mode. It allows players to invite or join each other to go on quests, explore the world and fight monsters.
Co-op is a lot of fun. With the entire universe focused on an online virtual reality world, it only makes sense that the online aspect would play a central role in a major video game adaptation. I would have loved if the developers had delved into the online component of Alicization Lycoris, making it a core feature of the game.
Sword Art Online: Alicization Lycoris feels like an everyday JRPG done in the style of SAO. I never thought the game was outright bad or poorly made, but I was rarely impressed by anything that happened from a story or gameplay perspective. The game would have benefited immensely from being more grounded in the online/MMO universe it’s based on. However, anime and manga fans will definitely enjoy the latest adaptation of Sword Art Online.
