Like most software developers, Adobe maintains a list of system requirements for Lightroom Classic CC, and the hardware on your computer can be used to run the software. However, most “system requirements” lists tend to only indicate what hardware is required to run the software, and not what hardware will provide the best performance. In addition, sometimes this list may show outdated, old hardware patches, or simply contain sub-optimal hardware.

The processor (or CPU) is one of the most important parts of a Lightroom Classic workstation. As GPU acceleration gains momentum, your choice of CPU will have a greater impact on overall system performance. However, keep in mind that in theory, a more powerful CPU is not always better, as there is a limit to the number of cores that Lightroom Classic can effectively use. In most cases, spending more money means poorer performance, so it’s more important to get it
Currently, the best CPU for all Lightroom Classic tasks is the Intel Core i9 14900K. For pure export, a high-core processor like AMD’s Threadripper PRO may be faster, but it comes at a higher price and lower performance in other parts of the workflow.
With the release of Lightroom Classic, Adobe took a big step towards using CPUs with more cores. However, having more cores (~8+) often helps with some tasks like exporting and previewing. In most cases, CPU frequency and core architecture have a greater impact than raw core count.

Lightroom relies heavily on per-core performance, so the best CPUs for this application have been back and forth between AMD and Intel for years. As you can see from the chart on the right, Intel’s 12th generation Core processors are currently in the lead, followed by AMD’s Ryzen 5000 series. This may change as new generations of Intel and AMD processors are released, so please contact our consulting team if you have any questions about the latest updates.
Adobe has been increasing its use of GPUs over the past few years, but it’s not a big deal for Lightroom right now. While you don’t need a top-of-the-line GPU to take advantage of Lightroom’s GPU acceleration, it might be worth getting a GPU that’s a little faster than you think to ensure Adobe’s capabilities on your system. GPU acceleration support will be added to Lightroom in the future.
Because Lightroom Classic does not use modern video cards for most tasks, we generally recommend a mid-range GPU to meet the needs of other related applications that use more GPUs, such as Photoshop. For most users, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti is a solid choice. A growing exception is Adobe’s addition of new artificial intelligence features, which you can read more about on their website.

Lightroom Classic doesn’t use the GPU much, so VRAM isn’t usually an issue. At least 6GB of VRAM is recommended if you have a 4K display, but all video cards currently recommended for Lightroom have at least 8GB of VRAM.
Lightroom Classic can use “professional” video cards, such as NVIDIA’s Quadro series, but for most users, GeForce cards are a better choice. Not only are GeForce cards more affordable, but they can beat the performance of Quadro cards for less.
Currently, NVIDIA is ahead of AMD in terms of performance. Also, we usually use NVIDIA over AMD unless there is a clear benefit to using an AMD card because NVIDIA cards are more reliable (from a hardware and driver perspective).
Unfortunately, 10-bit displays are not currently supported in Lightroom Classic. If you want to add sound to use this as a feature, you can vote for a feature request in Lightroom: Add support for 10-bit/channel color display.

The amount of RAM you need depends on the size and number of images you’ll be using, but most recommend a minimum of 16GB for the entire system. For most users, 32GB of RAM should be enough for most workflows. However, if you work with very large images/catalogs or use this machine for other things like editing large (750MB+) images in Photoshop, you’ll need 64GB or more of system RAM.
The CPU does all the processing, but if the memory can’t store it, it doesn’t matter how fast it is. What makes storage complicated is that you want to use the wide variety of browsers available today, and organize them to maximize Lightroom’s performance.
There are three main types of drives that can be used in Lightroom workstations: SSD, NVMe, and traditional disk drives. Of the three, traditional disk drives are the slowest, but they are also much cheaper and have larger capacities than SSD or NVMe drives. Because of this, they make excellent long-term storage drives, but depending on the size and resolution of your images, they may not be suitable for immediate use.
SATA SSDs are several times faster than disk drives, but they are more expensive. This drive is great for holding your operating system and applications, and storing photos and projects you’re currently working on.

There are two types of NVMe drives (M.2 and U.2), but one will be much faster than an SSD drive. They may cost more than SSD SATA, but in return they can be up to twelve times faster! Most of the time, you won’t see a performance boost from NVMe drives, as today’s standard SSDs are fast enough and rarely hinder performance, but these drives continue to drop in price, so you can use them.
